A leaf connoisseur

And yes, I had to Google how to spell "connoisseur" as it is not a word used in our daily vocabulary just in case you were wondering!  :)

When we got home from Duke on Wednesday, the weather was beautiful!  It was about 70 degrees (which for December is great here!) so we decided we had to get out after being inside the hospital and the car all day.  So Claire and I went for a stroller ride around the farm for a while.  Then I figured she would probably love to just crawl around in the grass and get some energy out.

So of course there are lots of leaves in our almost 10 acre yard.  Lots.  And we discovered that Claire is now a leaf connoisseur.  I guarantee you that she tasted almost every single leaf in our yard as I chased after her doing the finger sweep to get them off of her tongue.  Every single 1,578 leaf.  No, really probably more like 30 leaves but you get the point.  She also discovered she prefers leaves over grass and pine straw.

Anyways, it was fun watching her chase the leaves over the yard.  And then watch her crawl away from me really fast after she took a bite of a leaf so I couldn't take it away from her.  Here are a few picture of her leaf tasting.   Each picture shows a different leaf.

Then Daddy came home and Claire showed off her driving skills.

All in all we had a great afternoon outside!  A great payoff for all the torture she went through at Duke.

Nightmare on Erwin Road

Well, let me preface this post with the fact that the Duke visits went well based on the test results.  But Claire did not fare so well herself.  It was like Nightmare on Elm Street (except it was on Erwin Road where Duke is located) screaming and flashbacks for her.  Hence the post title.

Anyways, we left home around 4:30 am to head to Duke for her first appointment at 8:30 am.  Claire slept the entire ride to Durham which was great!  We even got there early enough we were able to eat breakfast in the cafeteria with Aunt Amanda as she was getting off of night shift.

We then went over for Claire's liver ultrasound.  She was totally fine until she realized what was getting ready to happen and she totally panicked.  Freaked out, screaming at the top of her lungs, kicking the US tech, pulling the US probe off of her belly, etc.  It took me holding her and her arms back and my mom holding her legs down while she screamed, cried, and trashed around to even try to get any good images.

It's like she was having terrible flashbacks and nightmares.  I can usually sit and watch the images and tell whether I see any cysts or not or if anything looks weird.  But not yesterday.  It was so sad because she was so scared.  And I felt horrible as I kept trying to reassure her that it wasn't going to hurt while I was trying to restrict her (another thing she hates).  After it was over Granny took Claire and she looked over at me with this look in her eyes like it was all my fault!

The tech said she couldn't even find the small cyst that the surgeon had left after the liver surgery.  She looked for it twice.  So I am not sure if it's gone or if she just couldn't see it because Claire wasn't being still.  I am praying it's just GONE!  Wouldn't that be wonderful!!!!!

Her next appointment was for an echo and wasn't until 11:30 am.  So I politely begged the US tech to see if they could go ahead and do the echo now since we were right there and in case they had to sedate Claire since she wasn't allowed to eat for 4 hours before her US.  They kindly obliged and we headed over for the echo.  You can see in the picture below just how pitiful she looked.  :(

The really nice receptionist found out Claire liked Elmo so she picked out "Elmo Saves Christmas" DVD and played it for Claire in hopes it would distract her.  That didn't work.  So she left and came back with a small Elmo with a backpack on his back. Claire liked him and said "Eh mo" (Elmo).

The echo went about like the US did so there are no pictures.  The nice receptionist stood in there singing Elmo songs and holding a flashing light trying to distract Claire.  She was so sweet!  They got the images of her heart that they needed without sedating her (thank God) but she was still so upset.

By then it was only about 9 am and her next appointment wasn't until 12:45 pm!  We REALLY did not want to just sit around Duke for 4 hours waiting for the next appointment so I went on and asked/begged to see if they could work her in earlier.  And they so graciously did!  We were called on back a few minutes later and of course she freaked out all over again when she was weighed and measured.  She weighed about 22 lbs and measured about 29" long.  She calmed back down and didn't freak out when the cardiologist came in.  But when he went to examine her - yes we were back on Elm Street!  Screaming bloody murder!  Poor thing.  I hated it for her.

The cardiologist said he had viewed her echo and it looked the same as last time so that was good.  She still has some pulmonary stenosis which is why you can still hear a murmur.  She also had moderate leakage from her pulmonary valve which he thinks is ok.  This is the part they will watch to see if it needs to be replaced in 15-20 years.  He said her branch pulmonary arteries all looked good too.  He also said the right side of her heart looked like it was functioning well too.  So all in all, good news!  We don't have to go back until June!  It will be the longest stretch of no doctors appointments for Claire ever!!!  He also said that it is very normal/typical for a baby who is Claire's age and who has gone through everything she has this past year to react the way she was.  He said he would be really concerned if she WASN'T acting that way.

I hope to hear from the liver surgeon in the next week or so after she has time to view the ultrasound.  If not, don't worry, I will be calling her!

I also discovered Claire is scared of elevators yesterday.  I don't know if it's the motion or the being closed in part.  But she tried to claw her way out of her stroller every time we got on one.

We then headed over to visit some friends in ICN.  Nurse Susannah and Nurse Rachel (2 of Claire's primary nurses) were working so we visited with them a few minutes.  Claire was happy then!!  She wanted them to hold her and she just crawled all over the furniture and talked/babbled.  It was good to see both of them!  We missed out on eating lunch with Nurse Marie, but we were all exhausted, so we wouldn't have been much company.  Hopefully over Christmas we will be able to see her!

Claire fell asleep on the ride home with applesauce in her mouth.  She was exhausted!  We were too.  I am so glad we got out of there early and were home after lunch instead of almost dark/supper time.

So although it was like living a nightmare for Claire with her panic attacks and flashbacks, I am thinking the results of the tests are good.  So we thank God for that.

We were able to go home and enjoy the 70 degree weather we had yesterday.  I will post more about that later.  Thank you for all of the prayers for Claire yesterday!  We really appreciate it!!

PS - you know you are exhausted when.......... you change your daughter's diaper on your bed and she so graciously leaves a streak of poop on your sheet on your side of the bed.  And you just scrub it off with a wipe and sleep on it anyway because you just don't have the energy to change the sheets.....  hahahahahaha

Claire's first Christmas parade

Claire enjoyed her very first Christmas parade this past weekend.  I wasn't sure how she would react to the very loud sirens and noises, but it didn't even phase her.  She was loving it!  We went to the Trenton parade and it was very nice.  Not crowded, lasted 30 minutes, and we got a front row view.  Trent drove a fire truck in the parade so that was neat.  I had thought about me and Claire riding with him, but figured she needed to take it all in her first year.

waiting for the parade to begin!

Here it comes!

Claire got so much candy!

Claire's friend Maddie on the float!

Jones Co. 4-H float

Maysville VFD truck with a fire dog on top

Here comes Daddy!

He was blowing the horns and playing the sirens for Claire.

Trent stopped in front of Claire so she could see him.

Look closely on top of the truck and you will see Santa!

Our family after the parade

Claire had an absolute ball.  The only time she cried is when we would put our hands over her ears to muffle the loud noises.  She didn't want us to do that.  She just sat and ate Cheerios and enjoyed the parade.  I am so glad we took her!

We head to Duke today for check ups and testing on Claire's heart and liver.  Please pray for great outcomes!!!!!!!!!!  I am a little nervous/anxious this time for some reason.

Breakfast With Santa

Saturday I took Claire to her first Breakfast with Santa.  I had no idea what to expect with her and Santa Claus or just in general.  But we had a really great time!  Claire did great but all she wanted to do was get down and crawl.  So she wasn't really scared of Santa.  She just was mad that she couldn't get down!

They also had Mrs. Claus there reading stories to the kids.  Claire liked Mrs. Claus!

Finally, I gave up and just let her crawl.  I know it was on a gross floor and I got some "crazy" looks from parents, but hey, it satisfied her for a few seconds.   I didn't let her do it long!  And I sanitized her hands several times.  This picture is funny because it looks like Ava is telling on Claire for doing something bad.  And the look on Claire's face is priceless!

We ate from a breakfast buffet and Claire ended up eating pancakes for the first time.  She liked them a lot!   We had eggs, bacon, oranges, donut holes, and a biscuit too.  I felt sorry for whoever had to clean the floors up after all 3 shifts of children had eaten.  I tried to pick up Claire's mess as best as I could.

They also had lots of other things for big kids to do like cookie decorating and bead necklace making.  But we will do those another year.  There was a tree with handmade ornaments there also that each child got to chose an ornament from.  I picked out this ornament because it was a dog that reminded me of Fuzz.

We had a great time visiting with Ava and her family.  And got a quick visit in with Izzie and her family.  All of the good pictures of all of us together are on Becky and Beth's cameras!  :(  So hopefully they will send them to me sometime soon and I will post them.

Hopefully this will be another fun tradition to continue with Claire and her friends!

Baby Parker 12/5/11 update

I am so happy to report that Parker is doing absolutely wonderful!  I was honored to be able to visit him this weekend at the hospital, and even more honored to get to hold that sweet baby for a little while!  It brought back so many memories of holding Claire for hours and hours and her being that small.  I think Parker weighs about 3 1/2 pounds and is feeding well.  His mom says they are thinking/hoping he may be home by the end of this week!  What a miracle!  Please continue to pray for Parker and his family.  Here is a picture of me holding him!  :)

Curly headed baby {and a few other things}

Claire has just a few curls.......

Mind you this is after her bath, so the curls are much more prominent with her hair wet or in humid weather.  But it's just so cute!!

Oh, and Claire is now more interested in real foods than baby food. Some of the new things on her menu are raisins, Nila waffers, macaroni and cheese, lasagna, and garlic bread.  She still loves M&Ms as her treat (she might get 1/2 an M&M every other day so don't freak out) and Cheerios.  I swear she can down an entire big box of Cheerios in no time.  So we are trying to feed her what we are eating and then just supplement with baby food.  Still haven't gotten the sippy cup down pat yet, but that will come in time.

Next week we head to Duke for heart and liver check ups.  Please pray that everything looks perfect!  Claire will have an echo of her heart and also an ultrasound of her liver.  We should also meet with the cardiologist.  I will update after the visits!

A special dress

My mom called me the other day and said Claire had received a package at her house.  She opened it and said it was a beautiful handmade smocked dress from a family friend.  She also said there was a sweet note included.  So when we got home that night I opened up the bag to discover not just a beautiful dress, but a breath taking dress.  It is light pink with hearts and roses smocked on the top.  Just perfect for our Claire Rose!

I read the letter that came with it and just bawled.  The dress maker had told how she bought the material right after my mom told her she was having a granddaughter.  Her and her daughter picked out the heart/roses pattern before they even knew Claire would have heart issues.  She told how she stitched and sewed while praying to God for Claire.  She sewed this dress through all of Claire's surgeries while praying for her with every stitch.  I mean, really.  How much sweeter can that be?  It melts my heart and humbles me so much.

So of course, I couldn't WAIT to put the dress on Claire!  If I thought the dress was breath taking, I had no  idea how it would make me feel seeing it on Claire.  I was overwhelmed with emotion.  This special dress that had been made specially for our girl that had been prayed over so much just for her.  I almost felt like this dress had been through  all of the last years' experiences with us (surgeries, scares, etc).  It was like this dress was a dress of memories and it was Claire's reward for making it through everything she did.  Ok, I can't type more or I will bawl again.  But you get the point.  It's really hard for me to put into words.  Thank you so much to the Duncan family for making this keepsake for Claire.  It means so much.

I tried to get some good pictures, but you just can't get her to pose like she used to.  She's too busy being on the move.  So here are the best ones I got.  And a video of her playing her favorite piano.

On another note, baby Parker is doing absolutely wonderful!!  He has been moved out of the NICU and into Convalescent care which is a step down unit (kind of like TCN for Claire).  He weighs 3 lbs 8 oz and has no IVs!!!!  Parker was able to wear clothes yesterday for the first time and is no longer in an enclosed isolette.  I hope to get by the hospital this weekend to meet him!  I will TRY to get a picture.  I have also set up a meal calendar for Parker's family, so if you are interested in fixing them supper one night, please let me know.  They are having to travel back and forth from hospital to home every day to visit him, and then come home to care for their 2 1/2 year old.  So cooking is the last thing on their mind, but they need good food to keep their energy up.

We have a busy weekend/week planned!  Hopefully some fun updates coming next week!
